The Argentine Tango is about the relationship
between a man and a woman - and there are two ways in which this can be expressed
through the dance:
It can turn into a power struggle of different wills - with the man and woman using different ways to triumph...
..or into a dance of two people becoming one, often these routines look as if the couple have become a single person with four legs.
That means that routines can appear loving - and the dance has been referred to as 'The History of Love in Three Minutes' and can seem like the most passionate dance that a couple can perform. But sometimes, the legacy of its rough beginnings means that the Argentine Tango retains a sense of competition, machismo and the fight for survival…
The basis of the dance is the lead and follow. The man needs to be strong, and lead the woman through the space of the dance floor, and the various figures and sequences in the routines. The man controls the woman in several different ways, using every part of his body - at times even using his feet to move her feet into the correct position.
