Tango In Gloucester

Tango Argentino

Tango is a fully improvised social dance with few or no routines to learn. However, there are rules to how the dance is led, so that two dancers who have never met should be able to dance together immediately. Tango is danced in pairs, which are usually mixed, with the man leading. However, there are many women who also know how to lead and traditionally men often learn how to follow in order to improve their leading.

Tango actually consists of three dances which you will usually dance throughout the evening at a Milonga. The first is Tango itself, which is generally a slow and sensuous dance. Then there is Milonga (the same name as the event itself - and in fact also the name of the dance hall!), which is an older and generally faster dance with a 2-4 rhythm as opposed to tango's 4-4 rhythm. Finally there is vals or waltz which is in 3-4 and about the speed of a Viennese waltz, but danced using each bar as a tango beat.
